EMO ADAMS
Is Duidelik
In rehearsal all his life, but playing in the present, Adams’ prodigious talent has been something he’s been honing since the age of 9, when his father first spotted his genius. Conscripted into various singing and dancing groups while growing up on the Cape Flats, each performance, or part he played, won the hearts of every single audience. His youth was filled with harmony and melody fuelled by his father and talented elder brother (and actor) Loukmaan Adams. Malay choirs are where Emo cut his musical teeth and cemented his cultural identity – a grounding that continues to pay dividends today. Seven years after the release of his first DVD release, Tall Dark & Afrikaans, his latest 2014 Universal Music debut offering, Is Duidelik, fills the gap and introduces a talent who’s played stages right around the country, as well as all over the world. From working for the late Taliep Pietersen and David Kramer as a stage hand on Kat & The Kings, to performing every single character in the globally successful show, ambition, hard work, commitment and raw talent are just some of the ingredients that make up Emo Adams’ success recipe. “I love to challenge myself,” Adams says of his cultural curiosity. “I have no fear and have have had, when it comes to performing.” From cruise hand to cruise director, lackey to lead actor, Adams knows nothing of boundaries or barriers. Rather he charts a path all his own and amplifies every single experience, each time to rapturous applause. “I’ve been blessed with great mentors,” he says. “Taliep and David afforded me a decade’s worth of experience playing in District 6: The Musical and Kat & The Kings.” The latter show toured London’s West End, played to sold-out shows in Vienna, Las Vegas and Frankfurt too – each city getting to enjoy Adams in full flight during the show’s incredible global gallivant. As the only actor to have played every single character in the production, Adam’s 10-year commitment wrapped on a high, ready for the next chapter that’s seen him on television (on his own show, Jou Show Met Emo) heard on national radio and shared on social media. KykNET welcomed Adams on Alie Barber, as did SABC2’s mini-series Malan en Kie, where he played the role of Solly.
