JAZZ AT HOME
Cape's Brasskap invades Pretoria
Two of Cape Town's favourite sons of jazz, McCoy Mrubata and Herbie Tsoaeli, are set to warm the stage in the jazz city of Pretoria on August. The pair will perform with their bands at The Barnyard Theatre, which is fast emerging as the new home of jazz in the capital city. While saxophonist Mrubata is from Langa township and bassist Tsoaeli from Nyanga, both musicians share the common trait of having taught themselves to play, with a great deal of help from older artists in their neighbourhoods as well as from community projects. McCoy is a respected band leader and passionate jazz exponent, as seen with him pursuing his career through three bands - McCoy and Friends, McCoy's Brasskap and McCoy's Quartet. These different formations allow Mrubata to indulge his art as he pleases with different ideas and approach. Anyone of the three bands in concert is a "Real McCoy", a guaranteed blast! Tsoaeli on the other is better known for lending his bass-playing virtuosity to almost all jazz greats of the local scene. Through his sole solo album, "African Time", he has proved that he is no slouch as the frontman - always delivering the goods on time as a composer, arranger and performer. Important to note is that his album won a 2013 SAMA award for best jazz album, a feat which vouches for the ability of the man better known for his role as the "Spice of Jazz Greats". Tsoaeli's humility and knowledge of jazz as an art form are two factors making him the in-demand bass player for both recording sessions and live shows. Ironically, though both McCoy and Herbie are from Cape Town, they have since made Johannesburg their home. This time it is Tshwane's turn to be mesmerised and soothed by their great jazz sounds. The show on Friday August 14 starts at 7.30pm. The Barnyard Theatre is located at the Parkview Mall in Moreletapark, Pretoria East.
